I noticed on instantwatcher today that Netflix added a few Shaws in HD. The few I looked at were subtitled with no dubbed option (my usual personal preference anyways).

So far I see:

Come Drink with Me

Shaolin Martial Arts

The Avenging Eagle

Martial Arts of Shaolin

Hopefully they keep adding more! :rockon

GREAT POST! Thank you so much for the heads up on this. I do appreciate it, as I'm sure other Netflix subscribers will also. :thumbsup

I went to Netflix to do a search on the movies mentioned that were now available for streaming, just to verify for myself that they were indeed available, and noticed that Come Drink With Me only has a 1 1/2 star rating!?!?!

I must admit, I have not yet seen this film, but from what I have heard, people seem to enjoy it. Those of you here that have seen it, how would you rate it out of 5 stars?

I'd say a solid 4 out of 5. I don't really see it as a masterpiece, but it's really good still. The first hour or so of the film is fantastic, especially thanks to the characters and the clever writing. I'd say it's a bit slow and even slightly anticlimactic at the end, but I still really enjoyed it.

The rating on Hulu is 3.5 out of 5 though. Hulu has a lot of Shaw Brothers movies for free (mostly English-dubbed though). Here are the films that are on there:

So far these are the same that are on iTunes

The only difference being, if you're already a Netflix subscriber, you can stream these films on demand, as oppose to having to buy them from iTunes. I would love to see more SB films added to Netflix.

Come Drink With Me is fantastic, but it isn't nearly as entertaining as some of the wuxia movies that would come later. Keep in mind this movie came out in 1966, and it's rooted somewhere between dance and martial arts. This movie was a real trailblazer, paving the way for other wuxia films that would come to define the style we know today. It's well known that Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was heavily influenced by this movie.

I would say Golden Swallow, the followup, is the more entertaining movie. But Come Drink With Me is worth seeing for it's historical significance. Expect more story/acting and less fighting.

I'll throw in my 2 cents on some of the others while I'm at it.

The Avenging Eagle is awesome. It's probably in my top 10 favorite Shaw Brother movies. You've got a pretty decent story featuring several of the Venoms (but not directed by Chang Cheh, the usual Venom's director). The director is Chung Sun, who didn't direct very many Shaw flicks, but he does have a couple standouts. There's some really great fight scenes in this movie, inventive weaponry, and some wild costuming (which I like). Throw all that together in a blender and you've got a good mix, but top it off with the most bad ass old dude villain since Pai Mei, and this one's a stone cold classic. Highly recommended.

Martial Arts of Shaolin is a love/hate relationship. It's a later era Shaw Brothers, getting pretty close to right before they crumbled. First the good. Jet Li + weapons + Shaw Brothers. Some of the fights are just spectacular, as you would expect from a young Jet Li. There's also this really cool lion dance scene that may or may not appeal to your tastes, but I really enjoyed. The bad news is the humor is a bit corny, the music is borderline atrocious, and some of the fights/moves are sped up. It does end pretty well if you can make it. I don't recommend the movie as much as the Jet Li fight scenes, especially if you like to see him using various weapons. If I ever watch this one again, I'll probably be skipping to the fights.

I have yet to see Shaolin Martial Arts.

It`s nice that these are appearing on Netflix and what I have watched so far looks really nice! Too bad that we don't have some of these movies on blu-ray with English subs instead of streaming.

I noticed the same thing! It almost killed me for a minute, but then I remembered that most of those ratings are probably done by people who were expecting a newer movie. People are scared of older movies, especially if they are from outside the USA.

As for my personal rating? I'd go with a 5 because it's a true Shaw classic. It may not be as strong as some of King Hu's other work, but it's still a solid movie. And, of course, it stars CPP, so what more do you need?

Also on Netflix is Kid With The Golden Arm.....

I'm hoping that Netflix add some more Shaw movies in October...

Updated the first post with all the Shaws that I know are on Netflix.

Hopefully they will add more in October, here's the movies being added to Netflix in Octoboer, I don't see any Shaws.  Don't know if this list is complete.

WOW!!! Thanks! Nice!

Will be adding some of these to my Q. I already have the recent 36th Chamber box set and have the blu-rays for Five Elements and Five Venoms. And, just bought Masked Avengers from iTunes. At least I can compare the quality of these Netflix streams to the blu-rays and digital downloads to see what differences there are. My money would be on the blu-rays looking better overall but I could be surprised.

Ok, I am shocked! I loaded my Celestial blu-ray of 36th Chamber and compared it to my Netflix stream. I did not see a difference except a minor "warmer" but extremely minuscule sharpness to the blu-ray over Netflix image. It was nothing that you could tell unless the image was paused. Really impressed with this now. I still prefer blu-ray over streaming as there is no promise that any of these films will still be on Netflix a year from now. In the past I was more impressed with the difference between my Japanese blu-ray of Super Inframan vs Apple iTunes as the blu-ray was the clear winner.

Invincible Shaolin - Netflix vs Funimation:

Netflix stream is an improvement over the Funimation image with better looking subs. Not a huge improvement but the image is more clear. Subbing is not the same:

Funimation - "The people sent by the Songshan Shaolin Temple have arrived?"

Netflix - "Those teacher from North Shaolin, they arrived yet?"

Also, Funimation has the Mandarin track and Netflix has the Cantonese track.

Comparing Masked Avengers on Netflix vs iTunes. The two images are almost the same but when you freeze on a close-up, it looks like the image on Netflix shows just slightly more detail. Not sure if it is just they way each encodes their files but iTunes shows the file size as 2.85gb. The other issue is the difference in the subs. You would think with Celestial providing the source that it would be the same on both.

Netflix - "You smashed our home, and you killed 28 of our family."

iTunes - "You thieves raided on me and killed my family of 28."

I love that these films are all in HD too. I think I've watched Avenging Eagle on here like four or five times now because the quality is so much better than my DVD copy.

I'm stoked to see what they add over the next few months and I'm hoping for more stuff that has not gotten US releases yet.

I was just watching Crippled Avengers last night but it didn't look as good to me as some of the other HD releases. And, I am way behind on my iTunes releases.

currently nothing from what I saw

So they have removed all of the Shaws they had? I wonder what's up with that.

Ivw also noticed a lot of Shaws that use to be free to watch for Prime Video subscribers is now rent or buy only.
