Member legendarycurry Posted August 3, 2015 Member Share Posted August 3, 2015 I really liked her in The Tournament especially. To me that film feels very influenced by Bruce Lee, not only does it feature scenes actually filmed at Bruce's HK home, but it also shows some Jeet Kune Do style adaptation techniques from Angela Mao as she adapts her traditional Kung Fu style to take on Muay Thai, even changing her clothes to a more contemporary style as her fighting style develops. Not unlike how bruce lee's Yellow Jumpsuit in GOD could represent contemporary clothing with an adapting fighting style and theoretical/philosophical approach to fighting and adapting.
Member DragonClaws Posted August 3, 2015 Member Share Posted August 3, 2015 Hapkido is a classic and Mao is on top form in that one. I've only seen clips from Lady Whirlwind which is a very early Golden Harvest production. The Tournament is an entertaining film and they actually went to Thailand to film some scenes. One Angela Mao movie that's I'm still wanting to get is Broken Oath. The clips featured in the Best Of Martial Arts documentary made me aware of this film.
Member Secret Executioner Posted August 3, 2015 Member Share Posted August 3, 2015 I really need to expand on her movies. All I have is the customary Enter The Dragon and a rather disappointing effort called The Legendary Strike. I wasn't too thrilled with this one though, I found it confusing and the action wasn't that impressive, which is a bit sad seeing the pretty good cast (Carter Wong, Angela Mao, Kam Kong, Chan Sing... There's definitely some talents here). My copy of The Legendary Strike is a cheap French DVD release of under the title Kung Fu Fighter, with a summary actually related to the film, but the pictures have really nothing to do with the movie. I also have a VHS that's mostly similar (same company, title and the only picture on the backcover is one that also appears on the backcover of the DVD) but the artwork has a vague Bruce Lee look-alike with nunchucks and the summary has an extra sentence mentionning a "B Lee" helping to protect Shaolin. Actually, it's interesting that I also have both a DVD and a VHS of her only other movie I have, the classic Enter The Dragon (both being Warner releases, of course).
Guest Anonymous
In my opinion her best movies are "When Taekwondo Strikes!" and "Hapkido." She really is the star of those movies even if they are about Koreans resisting the Japanese. Also, these movies are historically innaccurate since both Hapkido and Taekwondo did not exist during pre-WW2 times, but were developed later but lets not let that ruin the run. She man handles and completely kicks the ass of full grown men!! I mean KICKS...THEIR ASS!! Viciously!!! I MEAN DANG!!! She was blessed with very expressive and intense eyes that make her even more vicious and badass. Its awesome. She really is a star with great acting ability. I just think it was BS that they barely used her for Enter The Dragon. I mean why even get her in the film just to kill her at the beginning? The movie would have been so much cooler if she was the secret agent instead of that other chick and she had tons of more fighting with Bruce Lee and teamed up etc. But then yeah it would take away from Bruce Lee I guess...
Member Tosh Posted August 3, 2015 Member Share Posted August 3, 2015 Broken Oath is a great remake of Lady Snowblood and I think Angela is the only one that could pull off that role, her and Meiko Kaji both have those beautiful piercing eyes that tell you your about to get your ass kicked when they lock on to someone. Bruce Leung also kicks much ass, my favorite Angela Mao movie but I haven't seen the Himalayan yet.
Member DougWonnacott Posted September 27, 2015 Member Share Posted September 27, 2015 The Himalayan is pretty good. My top 10 would be: 1: Hapkido2: The Fate of Lee Kahn3: The Himalayan4: The Tournament5: Broken Oath6: The Angry River7: Thunderbolt8: Lady Whirlwind9: When Tae Kwon Do Strikes (A.K.A Sting of the Dragon Masters)10: Invincible Eight I missed out Enter the Dragon as she's only in the one scene. That would be top if I included it. Back Alley Princess is decent, but Angela only has a supporting role. One of a small number of films where she's wearing modern day clothing, she looks really hot in it. Stoner (A.K.A Shrine of Ultimate Bliss) is also worth a watch but it's a bit crazy. George Lazenby is really the star, but Angela gets plenty of screen time. The Association is even madder, and not very good. Again, only a supporting role. Dance of Death (action directed by Jackie Chan) feels like a slight anomaly in her filmography. It's basically one of those pre-Snake in the Eagle's Shadow Lo Wei/Jackie Chan films but with Mao playing the role Jackie would normally have. She's playing a boy (that never works!) and the action is more Chinese opera/acrobatic kung fu instead of her more familiar Hapkido relentless kicking style. It's good fun but a bad video transfer seems to be the only version available (as far as I'm aware). I tried watching Deadly China Doll but the picture quality was so bad I could barely make out what was going on. So it's difficult to say whether it was any good or not. I saw Legendary Strike quite recently. Not too good. It didn't help that it was a crappy pan and scan video transfer. Sadly not many of her films have had the remastering treatment. Shame. She did do some more, but I haven't seen them.
Member Lady Jin Szu-Yi Posted October 29, 2015 Member Share Posted October 29, 2015 I really enjoy Broken Oath (1977) the more I watch the more I enjoy the complexity of the revenge story (and it's ties to Lady Snowblood.) My only lament is that Angela and Chan Wai Man's mano-a-mano was as long a fight as I'd hoped; especially given their characters' connections to each other. Looking forward to watching / reviewing When Tae Kwon Do Strikes this weekend and perhaps another film from the Shout Factory! boxed set.
Member teako170 Posted October 29, 2015 Member Share Posted October 29, 2015 Here are some scans from "Fighting Stars" magazine which featured an interview with the 24-year-old Deadly China Doll herself. I posted this on FB a few years back and maybe even on the old forum though I can't recall. Enjoy....

Thats the one and only Black Dragon, still looking good for his age too. Would love to have seen that guy compete in MMA, as a younger man. He competed in many matches in H.K, in various dojos, while working on movie there.

Member ShawAngela Posted July 29, 2018 Member Share Posted July 29, 2018 I've found another series in which Angela Mao is supposed to play. At least, it's what I read on a French forum (hkcinemagic). The series tells the story of Mu Gui Yin, one of the female Yangs' generals and Angela Mao plays the Mongol princess,as it's said in hkcinemagic. I haven't watched it as yet, so, I can't confirm. If it's true, there are now 3 series to be added to Angela's filmography : Book and sword chronicles TTV 1984 Invincible god sword TTV 1990 A courageous clan aka Mu Gui Yin 1989 Here's a link to the whole series on youtube :
Member Rodolphe Dux Posted August 27, 2018 Member Share Posted August 27, 2018 I didn't find any mention of that interview, so I post it. It's a 2016 interview of Angela Mao from the New York times. Sorry if it's a double post. Angela Mao Interview
