When 36 Styles revealed one of their latest designs would be bringing the kung fu classic, The Challenger, to the masses, it brought to my attention that – oddly enough, I had not seen this film.
This 1979 film is one of the most popular and beloved kung fu films outside of the Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest Studios. Championed by genre lovers throughout the world, and a big inspiration to the rap group Wu-Tang Clan, Mystery of Chess Boxing features a stellar cast, but is perhaps most memorable for its colorful villain- Ghost Face Killer! This martial arts madman, a master of the Five Elements Style, throws down a medallion at the feet of his opponents before killing them with his deadly hands and feet.
